Bahasa asing dalam perspektif islam
Language Stereotyping has colored the cultural relations between the various cultural groups including the East (especially Islam) and the West. This is apart from the sicial competition and political motives between the two poles of culture throughout history so that each tends to glorify the elements of their culture while developing conceptions, assumptions. and negative prejudices about other cultural groups. Against the background of the political issues, the traditional Muslim society considers a foreign language as a language of “infidels” is not only unnecessary. but also illegitimate studied. Focus On English as the most important foreign language for the majority of Muslims around the world, this article seeks to straighten out misconceptions about languages in general and foreign languages in particular in the Islamic perspective. This is done through a review of normative texts in the two main sources of Islamic teachings: Qur’an and Hadith and elaboration of socio-historical facts of Islamic civilization in histoiy on the issue of language. The authors concluded that both the normative juridical and socio-historical facts inform that negative stereotypes about foreign language (English) did not have a strong argument in Islanmic civilization. On the contrary, Islam encouriges mastery of languages according to their importance for the implementation of Islam in a comprehensive mission
